A local client required the conversion of a luggage stack to accommodate a bicycle rack on a regional train. Key stakeholders included passengers with bicycles (bike users), train crew (including RTBU representatives), station staff, cleaners and maintainers.

Ferrovia’s concept development approach was to gather requirements, develop concepts using 3D CAD, then create a low fidelity mock-up of the luggage zone incorporating the bicycle restraints concepts for user evaluation. Workshops were conducted with crew and users on the mock-up which enabled many real and perceived issues relating to bicycles, users and general safety concerns to be worked through and discussed.

Ferrovia’s Involvement:

  • Complete review of 3rd party proposed bike restraint solution.
  • Undertake user review adopting 2 bike restraints to support 2 bikes.
  • Develop Stakeholder Engagement Issues Register to inform user Requirements to be satisfied by design
  • Undertake concept design development activities generating several design options to assess in 3D CAD
  • Design and build a low fidelity mock-up of the bike storage enclosure (2D and 3D CAD) to enable physical assessment of concept options with users
  • Undertake user engagement with bike users and crew to establish preferred design direction
  • Progress design development of concept to preliminary design, delivering a drawing suite to enable prototyping and evaluation of revised design on mock-up.
